After years of promises from Billy Bob Thornton, Bad Santa 2 will be finally heading in production, with the actor or actress set to reprise the role as booze-soaked, foul-mouthed con-man Willie from the follow-up to the 2003 humor classic. While we still don’t know significantly about the long-developing sequel, the newest addition to the throw gives us some indicator of what we can expect. We’re going to meet Willie’s mommy.
Miramax and Broad Green have announced the casting of Kathy Bates in the role of Willie’s presumably equally foul-mouthed new mother. The studios still haven’t reveal any further story details, but you don’testosterone levels cast an Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor to get a tiny role. What makes this casting particularly interesting is the era difference between Bates and Thornton, with the 67-year-old actress playing mommy to the 60-year-old actor.
Unfortunately, Terry Zwigoff will not likely return to direct and contains been replaced by Mean Girls overseer Mark Waters. Coincidentally, Mean Girls furthermore featured a strange, seven-year age gap in their mother / child casting, with a then-33-year-old Amy Poehler enjoying mother to Rachel McAdams, who was simply just 26 during the time.
Returning from Bad Santa’s original cast are Tony Cox while Willie’s criminal buddy Marcus and Brett Kelly since the weird kid having whom Willie previously established a very unlikely camaraderie. Doug Ellin (Entourage), Shauna Cross (Whip It) and Ashton Rosenthal are scripting the sequel to the mean-spirited holiday basic.
Bates currently stars in American Horror Story: Hotel in addition to recently signed on star in German director Xavier Dolan’s English-language introduction, The Death and Use of John F. Donovan, co-starring Set Harington and Jessica Chastain.
